Silverfish guide: what their location says about moisture

Identify silverfish and use the room, humidity, and damaged materials to find the conditions supporting them.

The short answer

A tapered, wingless, silvery insect with three tail filaments is likely a silverfish. Repeated sightings point toward a humid shelter or connected void nearby.

Identification

Start with observable evidence

    Silverfish are flattened and tapered with long antennae and three rear filaments.

    They move quickly and are commonly found at night or when stored items are disturbed.

    Damage appears as irregular grazing rather than the round holes associated with some beetles.

Where it lives

Habitat around the home

Humid wall voids, bathrooms, laundry rooms, attics, closets, and cardboard storage provide shelter. Paper sizing, glue, starches, and debris can serve as food.

Indoor activity can occur year-round. Sightings may increase when humidity rises or stored materials are moved.

Prevention

Make the property less useful to silverfish

  • Repair leaks and improve ventilation in damp rooms
  • Store paper, books, and fabrics dry and off the floor
  • Vacuum edges and reduce long-term cardboard storage
  • Seal plumbing and baseboard gaps after moisture problems are corrected

When to ask for help

The evidence has moved beyond a casual sighting

  • Sightings occur in several rooms or continue after humidity correction
  • Valuable books, documents, wallpaper, or textiles show feeding damage

The DIY limit

Treating the visible insect without finding the humid void usually gives temporary relief. Dusts and sprays must not be placed where the label prohibits them.
