Gopher guide: read the mound before disturbing the tunnel
Compare mound shape, plugged openings, plant damage, and tunnel patterns before attributing Austin lawn damage to a gopher.
The short answer
A pocket gopher usually pushes a fan-shaped mound beside a plugged tunnel opening. Identify fresh, connected activity before selecting any control method.
Identification
Start with observable evidence

Look for an off-center soil plug and a fan or crescent of excavated soil.

A line of fresh mounds can reveal the main tunnel direction.
- 03
Surface ridges suggest a different animal; broad shallow divots may point to armadillos or other foragers.
Where it lives
Habitat around the home
Pocket gophers spend most of their time underground in tunnel systems where soil and vegetation are suitable. Irrigated lawns and beds may remain attractive during dry weather.
When it appears

Activity can occur year-round, but fresh soil is easier to notice after rain, irrigation, or periods of active tunneling.
Prevention
Make the property less useful to gophers
- Confirm the animal before buying a control product
- Protect high-value new plantings with appropriate underground barriers when practical
- Monitor flattened mounds for fresh soil
- Coordinate work with irrigation and utility locations
When to ask for help
The evidence has moved beyond a casual sighting
- Fresh connected mounds continue across occupied lawn or valuable plantings
- The animal cannot be identified confidently or controls would be near utilities, pets, or children
The DIY limit
Unverified tunnel probing can damage irrigation and waste effort in inactive branches. Poison use also creates exposure and wildlife risks and must follow law and label.
