Bed bug guide: confirm the evidence before you treat

Learn where bed bugs hide, which signs are reliable, and why monitoring and follow-up matter more than bites alone.

The short answer

Look for the insect and its evidence in seams, joints, and narrow cracks near where people rest. A skin reaction cannot confirm the pest.

Identification

Start with observable evidence

  1. 01

Adults are flat, oval, wingless, and reddish brown; younger stages are smaller and paler.

  2. 02

Dark spotting, shed skins, and eggs cluster in protected cracks near beds or upholstered furniture.

  3. 03

Inspect with a flashlight and a thin card, but avoid carrying loose items into another room.

Where it lives

Habitat around the home

Bed bugs shelter in mattress seams, bed-frame joints, headboards, furniture, baseboards, and nearby cracks. They can move with luggage, furnishings, and belongings rather than because a home is unclean.

When it appears

Central Texas seasonality

Indoor infestations can persist year-round. Travel and movement of belongings affect introductions more than outdoor weather.

Prevention

Make the property less useful to bed bugs

  • Inspect lodging beds and keep luggage away from sleeping surfaces
  • Examine used furniture before bringing it inside
  • Use light-colored encasements and interceptors as monitoring tools when appropriate
  • Reduce clutter near sleeping areas without moving infested items between rooms

When to ask for help

The evidence has moved beyond a casual sighting

  • A live insect, egg, cast skin, or characteristic spotting is found
  • Evidence appears in multiple rooms or a multi-unit building

The DIY limit

Bed bug eggs, hidden harborages, and resistance make single-product approaches unreliable. Foggers can spread pesticide without reaching cracks and may move insects deeper into the structure.
