The short answer

Start with nest structure and behavior, not just color. Paper wasps use open combs; baldfaced hornets build enclosed paper nests; yellowjackets may use concealed or ground sites; and honey bees build wax comb and may need relocation or referral.

## Start with observable evidence

  Use zoom from a safe distance to capture body shape, hair, markings, and the nest or opening.

  Record whether insects hover individually, follow a busy two-way flight path, or form a resting cluster.

  Do not approach closely enough to provoke nest defense for the sake of a photograph.

Where it lives

## Habitat around the home

Eaves, soffits, wall voids, trees, shrubs, ground cavities, sheds, and utility enclosures all provide nest sites. Flowering landscapes also attract harmless foraging pollinators.

When it appears

## Central Texas seasonality

Social wasp colonies build through warm months and may become more noticeable later in the season. Honey-bee swarms can temporarily cluster while searching for a new site.

Prevention

## Make the property less useful to wasps, hornets & yellowjackets

- Repair screens and building gaps after confirming they are inactive

- Keep outdoor food, recycling, and sweet drinks covered

- Inspect play equipment and seldom-used sheds before activity

- Leave harmless pollinators on flowers undisturbed

Safety note

Call emergency services for symptoms of a severe allergic reaction after a sting. Do not wait for pest-control assistance in a medical emergency.

When to ask for help

## The evidence has moved beyond a casual sighting

- The nest is in a wall, high location, or occupied travel path

- Anyone nearby has a history of serious sting reactions

The DIY limit

Spraying an unidentified nest from a ladder or sealing a live opening can increase sting and fall risk. Structural colonies may require opening, removal, cleaning, and repair.
