# Austin rodent guide: read the evidence and find the opening

Learn what droppings, gnawing, attic sounds, and exterior gaps can reveal about mouse and rat activity.

The short answer

Do not rely on sound alone. Combine the size and location of droppings with gnawing, rub marks, tracks, food access, and exterior openings to narrow down the animal and route.

Identification

## Start with observable evidence

-
  01

Fresh droppings tend to look dark and soft; older material becomes dull and brittle, but age estimates are imprecise.

-
  02

Roof-rat evidence is often concentrated above ground, while mice use very small gaps throughout a structure.

-
  03

Gnaw marks, greasy travel marks, and repeated trap disturbance help establish an active route.

Where it lives

## Habitat around the home

Attics, wall voids, garages, cabinets, dense vegetation, rooflines, and utility penetrations provide shelter and travel paths. Pet food, bird seed, fruit, and unsecured waste add pressure.

When it appears

## Central Texas seasonality

Rodents can use homes year-round. Reports often increase when heat, storms, construction, or colder periods change outdoor food and shelter.

Prevention

## Make the property less useful to rodents

- Store bulk food and animal feed in gnaw-resistant sealed containers

- Repair damaged screens, sweeps, vents, and utility seals

- Keep branches and dense vines away from the roof and siding

- Correct outdoor water and waste sources

Safety note

Rodent waste requires careful cleanup. Avoid dry sweeping or vacuuming contaminated material, and use current public-health guidance for ventilation, disinfection, and protective equipment.

When to ask for help

## The evidence has moved beyond a casual sighting

- Droppings, gnawing, or sounds continue after food has been secured

- Entry points involve the roof, utilities, or repairs that must be sequenced with trapping

The DIY limit

A few traps may remove individual animals without closing the route. Poorly placed bait can create risk for children, pets, and wildlife and does not replace exclusion.
