# Earwig guide: damp shelter, mulch, and indoor routes

Recognize earwigs and learn why irrigation, rain, mulch, and worn door seals influence indoor sightings.

The short answer

The forceps at the rear are distinctive. Finding earwigs indoors usually means damp outdoor habitat and a nearby entry route, not an infestation centered in the living space.

Identification

## Start with observable evidence

-
  01

The body is elongated and ends in a pair of curved or straighter forceps.

-
  02

Earwigs hide by day and become active at night in protected damp places.

-
  03

They may be found beneath pots, boards, mulch, mats, and leaf litter.

Where it lives

## Habitat around the home

Moist organic debris and narrow shelters are preferred. Around homes, irrigated beds, stacked materials, planters, and slab edges can concentrate activity.

When it appears

## Central Texas seasonality

Warm wet periods and irrigation support outdoor numbers. Heavy rain, heat, or disturbed shelter can send individuals indoors.

Prevention

## Make the property less useful to earwigs

- Thin wet mulch and remove leaf litter beside the structure

- Adjust irrigation to avoid persistently damp foundation edges

- Seal door thresholds and utility gaps

- Move planters, boards, and mats away from entry doors

Safety note

Earwig forceps can pinch defensively but they are not venomous. Avoid unnecessary pesticide use in living areas for an occasional invader.

When to ask for help

## The evidence has moved beyond a casual sighting

- Large numbers enter repeatedly despite moisture and exclusion changes

- Activity is concentrated in a hidden drainage or structural moisture area

The DIY limit

Indoor spraying misses the outdoor source. If the landscape remains continuously damp, new earwigs can replace those removed.
